To Flash Or Not To Flash? What Can Ruin Your Ecommerce Website Design?

Ecommerce website design that’s too clever Put yourself in the customer’s position. That’s probably easier than you think – consider the last time you visited an online retail site. What did you like? Did you like the fact that it was clearly laid out, easy to navigate and the buying process was quick and simple? Or did you like the fancy background, the intrusive flash or the promotional video that overlaid your shop front and took ages to load? Overcomplicated ecommerce website design is a sure way to encourage customers to bounce over to eBay or a rival site. A site has to be eye-catching and interesting, but overdo it and you’ll simply annoy your customers. Website design that’s not clever enough So keep it simple, right? Well, yes, simple but not boring. Tempt your customers in with fresh content, special offers and online features that will engage them rather than swamp their experience with unnecessary features. Make the experience one that encourages browsing (the best way to get people to impulse buy) but inevitably leads to a sale. Guide them through the process gently but firmly, keeping them interested all the way through. If your  ecommerce site is part of your business website, make sure there’s a clear definition between the online retail section and the rest of the site. Clickthroughs across the site all leading to your retail section help to guide the casual user through the maze of home pages and ‘about us’ sections that act as a jumping off point for the real business of the site - selling your products. Ecommerce website design that doesn’t market itself The best ecommerce website design is useless if nobody knows you’re there. You know all about  SEO for a standard website, so don’t forget about it for your ecommerce site. If you’re not sure how to do that, then it’s time to call in an expert. An experienced  e-commerce website design expert will be able to take an objective look at your site and guide you down more profitable paths. Have you considered your demographic? Is your site suitable for mobile browsers or is there too much cluttering up the page for small screen users? The mobile market is one that is growing rapidly, meaning that anyone with an ecommerce site has to consider both fixed base users (those browsing on desktop PCs and laptops) and those who are browsing on the move with smart phones and Blackberrys. Can your site cater to both types of users? Is your website Twitter-friendly or being ‘friended’ on Facebook by lots of potential customers? These are all elements of ecommerce website design that need to be taken into consideration. It’s not just how it looks that matters, it’s how it functions, the user experience and of course, converting clicks into sales. © dotCommerce – ecommerce website design at http://www.dotcommerce.co.uk Continue Reading
