Scientific Press Books

Description

I\'m looking for a design firm/agency to partner with on an ongoing Graphic Design Project. There is a division of the Mayo Clinic that we call the Mayo Clinic Scientific Press. It is in this division that our illustration staff, photography staff, writers and designers assist the authoring physicians in getting their books published. Until recently, we have designed these books in-house using contracted design resources. However, due to this limited staff becoming a bottleneck in the process, I have been asked to find a partner that can handle the design of these books.

Here are some typical specifications:
• Average page count: 570
• Average # of images: 400
• A complete bookmap, logo\'s, copy, images & medical illustrations will be provided.
• Text is provided in Word. Some design guidance will be evident in the word file.
(ie. Shaded & framed text boxes. Rough image placement etc.)
• Average # of images/book: 200
• It is possible that multiple books can be in production at the same time. (0-to-5 or 6 at various stages)
• Preferred design program: Adobe InDesign
• Currently they utilize 6 InDesign Page Templates.
• Projects are designed in 4 color. However, you can see by the attached link that there really isn’t too much color involved.
• 3 rounds of proofing. Please describe proofing process.
• When done in-house, we estimated roughly 1hr of design/page. (includes proofing rounds)
• Mayo staff provides the Table of Contents copy. You will do the formatting & layout.
• The Publisher (Informa) provides the index copy. You will do the formatting & layout.

This is not difficult design work. It is largely busy work, but a culture of constant communication will need to be fostered throughout the process. A key contact at Mayo (Book Project Manager) would be assigned to ensure that your questions get answered and timelines are adhered to.

I have an “update meeting scheduled for this Thursday 10-9-08 with the Mayo Clinic Scientific Press. I will use this meeting to seek answers to any of your questions, but ideally they’re hoping to hear that I’m gathering costs and generally progressing in my search for a partner.
