An internet consultant from WebBizIdeas.com (Brian Peters) is a member of an Army Reserve unit out of St. Cloud, Minnesota, and spent over a year on active duty. While he was activated, he began to realize how important it was for people to stay connected with friends and family back home. Soldiers and families were able to send photos and speak on the phone, but all too often they were unable to send videos to one another.
It was not until his Brother, who is in the Navy, told me of his frustration with not being able to receive videos of his newborn son that he realized military families needed a site strictly dedicated to sending videos. After several months of planning, www.miltube.com was created.
When developing the site, I wanted it to be simple. In addition, I wanted to develop a site that allowed military units to create their own groups. Moreover, I wanted service members, families, and friends to have the option to make their messages private. I wanted the site to be clean, profanity free, and non-political. We hope that www.miltube.com accomplishes all of these and more; it is built on Web 2.0 social networking software
In addition to creating www.miltube.com, we are also creating a program called “Operation Storytelling”. While I was overseas, I noticed that there were a lot of service members that would record themselves reading a book to their children. They would then send a CD in the mail and have their children watch along at home. Operation Storytelling is along those same lines, only they will be able to accomplish this without delay.
Operation Storytelling is a program in which we take donations of children books, and catalog them on www.miltube.com. The service members and their children will then be able to request books. We will then send the books out, free of charge, to the service member so that they can record themselves reading the book one chapter at a time. Once they have recorded themselves, they will be able to upload the videos onto www.miltube.com and send their children emails inviting them to view the videos.
